Essential Guide to Navigating Melbourne Like a Local

Are you excited about your trip to Melbourne?

But as charming as this place is, it also has a bit of a rough edge.

I’ll share a few “Melbourne survival tips” I learned from my own experiences in Melbourne, including being embarrassed and almost getting back-smashed by locals.

Listen carefully, thinking this is a really close friend telling you everything!

First, let’s talk about the trams. Trams are free in downtown Melbourne, right?

So everyone thinks, “Wow, what a steal!” and rides them, but there’s something to be careful about.

The moment you miss even one stop in that free zone, you’re considered a “free rider.”

Ticket inspectors, dressed in plain clothes, will suddenly show up and swipe your card, and if you get caught, you’ll face a hefty fine.

It’s a real bummer to come on a fun trip only to find yourself losing a few days’ worth of food money, right?

So, don’t forget to tag your Myki card whenever you go out of town!

And Melburnians’ obsession with coffee… I told you it’s no joke, right? But as delicious as they are, cafes close incredibly early.

By 3 or 4 p.m., they’ll just say, “I’m going home from work. Bye!” and close their doors.

If you’re thinking of it like Korea and plan to leisurely head to a cafe after dinner, you might find yourself crying at the sight of a tightly closed door.

Make sure to check the opening hours of any good restaurants or cafes on Google Maps! It’s a must.

Oh, and the weather in Melbourne is practically bipolar. If you go out with just sunglasses because the sun is out in the morning, you’ll likely be caught in the afternoon rain and wind, leaving you stranded like a mouse.

That’s why people here always carry a thin windbreaker or a small umbrella in their bags.

Don’t try to “beat the weather”; just surrender to the weather. Dress in layers, you know?

Here’s a tip for making reservations.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Melbourne is a “city of reservations.”

If you think, “I’ll just go and eat if there’s a table,” you’ll end up starving.

For things like the Great Ocean Road or penguin tours, make sure to book online in advance.

And sometimes, when making restaurant reservations, they ask for your credit card information to prevent no-shows. Don’t be afraid to register your card.

On the other hand, if you can’t make it, be sure to cancel in advance to avoid paying!

Finally, one more important thing! Australia is stricter about jaywalking than you might think.

The police are watching and even issue fines.

And when crossing the street, cars come from the left, not the right, so you might unconsciously look the other way and get a surprise.

This is a matter of survival, so promise to always look right and left before crossing!

So, after hearing this, doesn’t that make your trip to Melbourne feel a little more real?

With just a little caution, Melbourne is truly the most romantic and enjoyable city in the world.

Prepare smartly in our ‘Justice’ style and create the perfect trip!
