It’d be a shame to go all the way to Melbourne and just see and eat.
So the first thing I did was ride the old train called “Puffing Billy.”
Do you remember the cartoon “Thomas and Friends”?
That train literally appeared right before my eyes!
It chugged along, puffing out white smoke, and I sat on the train window as it passed through the forest. (Though, for safety reasons, we have to be a little careful these days.)
The cool mountain breeze hit my face, and the smell of grass as it passed through the lush ferns… wow, I felt like I was in a fairytale, my mouth hanging open.
The townspeople passing by waved at the train, and I found myself waving excitedly, like I was a celebrity.
And this was the ultimate flex I can recommend: floating high into the Melbourne sky in a hot air balloon at dawn.
Actually, when I woke up at 4 a.m., I’d grumble, “Am I crazy? Why at this hour…”
But the moment I looked down at downtown Melbourne with the sun rising above, my mouth fell open and wouldn’t close.
The skyscrapers lay like toys beneath my feet, and the orange sunlight streamed through them… The peace I felt in that silence was on a whole other level than when I was on a plane.
It was expensive, but it was so moving that I couldn’t help but exclaim, “I don’t mind starving myself today!”
Oh, right! At night, I went to Phillip Island and watched the penguins “get off work.”
It was truly amazing.
At sunset, if you sit on the beach and wait quietly, hundreds of little penguins will waddle out, riding the waves.
They’ll trip over each other, wait for their friends who’ve fallen behind, and go home… It’s so adorable. I just wanted to say, “Hey, you guys worked hard today!”
However, the night sea breeze is really biting. I tried to look cool and went out wearing less, but I ended up shivering more than a penguin.
You guys should definitely bring a blanket!
Finally, one of the few things that truly captures the essence of Melbourne is riding the tram.
Especially the old brown No. 35 tram. It’s free, which is even better (haha), but the rattling vibration and the European-style buildings outside the window really complete the Melbourne ambiance.
Just taking the tram for a spin, people-watching, and aimlessly cruising around will make you think, “Wow, I’m really on a trip!” and make your heart flutter.
What do you think? Listening to my story makes you want to go to Melbourne right now, take a train, and see penguins, right?
Melbourne is a city you really have to experience firsthand, not just sit back and watch!
