Do you know what comes to mind when you first open the Tokyo subway map?
“Oh, I won’t be able to get back to my dorm today!” There are dozens of colors, and each company is different… It’s mind-boggling.
But don’t worry!
I’ll share with you all the tips I’ve learned through personal experience.
“Just trust the lime green circles and follow them!”
Are you feeling overwhelmed after arriving in Tokyo for the first time? Then just look for the “lime green” line on the screen.
This is the JR Yamanote Line, which circles the center of Tokyo like Seoul’s Line 2.
Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Tokyo Station… It takes you to all the popular spots we know.
Even if you get lost, just think, “I’ll find it eventually,” and you’ll find yourself back on track. This magical line is a true return to your starting point.
But what if you take it during rush hour? Be careful, you’ll experience the “hell train” experience of being forced to get off on someone else’s back!
Getting a paper ticket in Tokyo these days can be a bit frustrating.
The lines are long, and getting change is a hassle.
If you have an iPhone or Galaxy, just register your PASMO or Suica card in your wallet app and use it.
Just tap your phone through the ticket gate and you’ll be greeted by the locals.
Plus, you can just say “Pasmo desu!” when buying snacks at a convenience store! Thanks to this, I traveled without a single penny left over.
“Shinjuku Station isn’t a station; it’s a ‘dungeon,’ seriously.”
Everyone, this is a warning. Shinjuku Station and Shibuya Station aren’t just buildings.
They’re giant mazes! I was trying to get out through Exit 3 this time, but when I came to my senses, I was crying near Exit 8. 😂
Here, you absolutely must trust Google Maps.
And keep your eyes glued to the ceiling, following the arrows. If you miss one while chatting with a friend? Congratulations, you’ve entered a new world!
If you plan on taking the subway more than four times a day, the ‘Tokyo Subway Ticket’ is the way to go. Buy something like a 24-hour ticket and you’ll have unlimited rides for that time.
“Oh? I got off the wrong train!” Don’t worry about losing money, just get back on and go, it’s so relaxing.
However, this ticket doesn’t allow you to ride the lime-green JR lines I mentioned earlier.
It only covers the Metro and Toei lines, so don’t forget to check the ticket gate logos before getting in!
“Only take a taxi when you’re about to break your toes!”
Japanese taxi fares are still outrageous. The meter ticked up faster than my heartbeat. 😂
Still, my luggage was so heavy that I only rode it once, but it’s always amazing to see the doors automatically open.
The drivers are so friendly, too.
But our wallets are precious, so let’s try to get back to our accommodations before the last subway train leaves!
Tokyo transportation may seem complicated at first, but after just one day of suffering, you’ll quickly get used to it.
Later, you’ll find yourself saying, “Oh, I should transfer to the orange line this time!”
