Melbourne Accommodation: Pros and Cons of Popular Areas

Where you stay in Melbourne can completely change the color of your trip.

I’ll share with you the pros and cons I noticed while staying there, in detail!

First of all, the easiest place to stay is the CBD (Central Business District).

If you’re someone who hates walking or who hates walking, just choose this place.

It’s within the free tram zone, so you don’t have to worry about transportation costs, and you can easily walk to a hip cafe nearby for a cup of coffee as soon as you wake up.

But are there only advantages? The city center is quite noisy even late at night.

You can hear the “ding-ding” of the trams passing by, and on Friday nights, you can hear the excited chatter of locals.

Rooms are also on the expensive side, so you might occasionally find yourself wondering, “Huh? Why is my room so small?”

Still, there’s no better place to experience the true traveler experience!

Oh, and what I really recommend is apartment-style accommodation.

Eating out is quite expensive in Australia, isn’t it?

So, if you book accommodation with a kitchen, you can buy steak from the supermarket and quickly grill it up. That’s one of the great things about traveling. You can even do your own laundry, so you don’t have to pack too many clothes—that’s the real bonus!

However, you won’t be able to expect daily cleaning services like you would in a hotel, and you’ll sometimes have to take out the trash yourself, so a little diligence is required.

If you’re looking for something a little more hip and want to live like a local in Melbourne, I recommend Fitzroy.

Vintage shops and charming cafes are lined up on every street corner, and the neighborhood itself is a work of art.

You know that dream of getting dressed in the morning and saying hello to your favorite cafe owner?

However, Fitzroy is a bit far from the city center, so you have to take the tram to get there, and since it’s not a free zone, you have to use a travel card.

And since many of the buildings are old, there’s no elevator… You might tear up carrying your heavy suitcase up the stairs, so be sure to check!

Finally, if you love the ocean, St. Kilda isn’t bad either.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to walk along the beach every morning and watch the penguins leave work in the evening?

However, the 20-30 minute tram ride back and forth every time you go downtown can be quite a chore.

And there are often drunk people at night, so those who are more timid might feel safer in the downtown area.

Ultimately, your choice will depend on whether you’re a “shopping and foodie” type or a “leisurely local” type.

So, after hearing your story, does a neighborhood that makes you say, “Ah, this is the place for me!” pop into your head?

Let’s find the perfect base camp for your style and start your worldly journey!
