Jeju Offers Free Public Bus Rides for Children and Teens

Get ready, Jeju! Starting August 1, 2025, children and teenagers across Jeju Island will be able to ride all public buses for free. This groundbreaking initiative makes Jeju the first province in South Korea to offer such universal public transportation benefits for its youth.

A New Era of Transportation Welfare

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is making significant strides in universal transportation welfare. This new policy isn’t just an expansion; it’s a complete shift in how Jeju supports its younger residents.

Previously, only middle and high school students received support for school commute costs, and that was limited to specific routes and times. Now, the scope is much broader:

  • All teenagers (aged 13-18), including those outside of traditional schooling, will enjoy free access to all bus routes, regardless of time or destination.
  • Children will also see an expanded range of free bus services. Beyond the existing free city bus rides, they’ll now be able to use express buses and even airport limousines at no cost!

A Collaborative Effort for Youth Mobility

This progressive policy is a direct result of the “Agreement on Free Public Transportation for Youth” signed in April between Jeju Province and the Jeju Provincial Office of Education. Both institutions are committed to ensuring the mobility rights of young people and enhancing their access to transportation and educational welfare. They agreed to transform the existing school commute support into a comprehensive free-ride system.

Jeju’s Vision for a More Equitable and Sustainable Future

Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon highlighted the significance of this policy, calling it a “paradigm shift in transportation welfare that truly guarantees the mobility rights of teenagers and children.” He emphasized that it lays the foundation for all children to have equal access to educational and cultural opportunities, regardless of their economic circumstances.

Governor Oh also noted the environmental benefits, stating that encouraging the use of eco-friendly public transportation will contribute to carbon neutrality efforts. He expressed his hope that this pioneering policy in Jeju will inspire other regions to adopt similar initiatives, ultimately contributing to the advancement of transportation welfare across South Korea.

This is a fantastic step forward for Jeju, demonstrating a strong commitment to its youth and a vision for a more accessible and sustainable future. So, mark your calendars – August 1st is set to be a game-changer for children and teenagers on Jeju Island!
